About

The Ballarat Trout Hatchery 150 year celebration will occur on 22 August 2020 and begins with the re-enactment of the arrival of the first trout ova to the Ballarat Fish Acclimatisation Society at Ballarat station and the transfer to the hatchery. There will be a welcoming committee dressed in period costume and they will go to the current hatchery in a 150 year old horse drawn taxi. At the hatchery the trout ova will be received by the Mayor of Ballarat and placed in a bathtub, which was how the hatchery began. Due to COVID-19 the hatchery may not be open for viewing and tours and this may change if COVID-19 regulations are relaxed. In the afternoon there be a re-enactment of a trout release into Lake Wendouree at Durham Point . For this re-enactment 100 year old vintage trucks will be used to carry old milk urns with the fish to be released where the Society volunteers dressed in old world costumes will release the trout. Vintage cars will be used to carry participants to Durham Point.
